How to Make Soap from Scratch- Cold Process Video

In this week's tutorial I show you how to make your own handmade soap from scratch! It's not difficult and can easily be made using just 4 ingredients- canola oil, olive oil, water, and sodium hydroxide (lye). I came up with this recipe myself and it does not include any fragrances or colors. I wanted to keep it nice and simple for you guys.

This is just an introduction to soapmaking. If you want to take it a step further I recommend you do your research and learn as much about soapmaking as you can because there are a lot of different factors that play a role in the chemical process that is creating soap.

This video is fully captioned for the hearing impaired.

There is no ...
There is no requirement for animal fats in cold processed soap. I make all my soap using? only vegetable based oils and it works out just fine. :o)

for making the ...
for making the hard soap the mix should be 75% of animal fat and? 25% of Vegetable oil and add table salt to the boiling liquid sop to remove water

Until I saw this ...
Until I saw this vid I was petrified of LYE!!! Just the thought of using it knowing that it can be so dangerous if improperly used discouraged me from wanting to make cold process soap. However, after seeing how expensive those who are pro soap makers make it for those that would like the benefit of cp soap vs. commercial... I decided that I will learn the craft myself! Your video has given me the confidence that? although I'm no expert, it CAN b done!!! I will use all of the recommended links:)

Or.. your brain ...
Or.. your brain works WAY too? slow.

If you don't have ...
If you don't have that thingy to measure ounces can u just use a regular? scale?

I'm sorry about ...
I'm sorry about that. I read wrong and confused KOH with NaOH/vice versa... that's why I removed my comment. Thanks for responding so quickly. I've just ordered some soap molds and I plan on making soap this? weekend. Thanks again.

I don't say to use ...
I don't say to use potassium hydroxide in this answer. I clearly state that it is used in making liquid soap not? the soap I make here. The two should never be interchanged as they have different properties and require different recipes.

Ok.? Now turn it ...
Ok.? Now turn it into dynamite!

This...is a? ...
This...is a? chemical burn.

My soap has been ...
My soap has been sitting over one day and is only? halfway solid. Why?

Both NaOH and KOH ...
Both NaOH and KOH are used in soap making. NaOH is used? to make solid soap while KOH is used to make liquid soap. Soaps made of KOH are softer and can more easily be dissolved in water than NaOH soaps. When soap making, sodium hydroxide cannot be substituted with potassium hydroxide and vice versa because soap making recipes will have different quantity requirements for these two chemicals depending on the kind of soap being manufactured.

I also read that ...
I also read that olive oil can take an extra long? time to solidify -- and yet, you used it without any difficulties. Is my recipe OK?

Is there a ...
Is there a difference between `Potassium Hydroxide` (Caustic Potash KOH flakes) and `Sodium? Hydroxide`? I saw another Youtube video using the former.. so I bought it. I used it in your recipe. I used distilled water... and cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil and canola oil. It`s been 3 days now... and it`s solidifying *very* slowly. About 1/3 of it is solidifying... unlike the 24-hour turnover I see in most videos.

I love this video ...
I love this video but can i? ask if i can use a normal thermometer

Thanks. It's ...
Thanks. It's actually very moisturizing. Depending on the oil combinations you use? they are a lot milder than the "soap" you buy in stores so they are less drying and even moisturizing on the skin.

I know soapmakers ...
I know soapmakers that mix at 90-degrees and others that don't even measure. I even know soapers? who will mix at 90-degrees and then pop it in a soap "fridge" so their soap doesn't go through gel phase. It's just a matter of preference. After experimenting with different temps you figure out what's best for you. I like to soap at a higher temp to help my soap go through gel phase because I like that look of my soap better. Have fun.

all other ...
all other soapmakers claim lye and oils should be around 110 degrees farenheit - great intructions, though,? thanks

Kind of.. noticed ...
Kind of.. noticed that when I felt my skin on fire LOL.. Next thing I knew I was in the hospital? all confused. o.O

NO. The curing ...
NO. The curing process is what allows the mixture to turn into soap by converting all the lye into soap. DO NOT try to use he liquid mixture as liquid soap. You will get burned!? The lye is still active. Liquid soap involves a whole 'nother process with different ingredients. Please do your research before trying to make your own soap.

So if you do this ...
So if you do this and make soap bars, would you do the same process but without letting the soap? set, make liquid soap?

That is cool. Just ...
That is cool. Just compare any multinational soaps ingredients to yours. Those? are in the shops full of unreadable ingredient. How is the effect after applying these on skin? Doesnt make it dry?

does it? matter if ...
does it? matter if its normal water or do you have to buy distilled water whatever that is? xox

Where did? you get ...
Where did? you get you goggles

thank you that was ...
thank you that was so genuine and so informative...You were so inspirational, as a beginner in this game, I learned heaps...thank you? and God Bless xx Katherine

That is how you ...
That is how you make soap. When the oil and? the lye bind together there will the no more lye left and it is no longer toxic.
